A continuous programe of Pine tree plantation formation is carried on during each planting season with the

following objects:-

1. Conservation of water.

2. Revenue.

3. Beautifying and preventing erosion of the bare

hills in all parts of the Colony.

Shade and flowering trees are planted by the sides

of all public roads and small plantations are made of trees

which may later be of economic value.

The enforcement of the regulations forbidding the removal of growing plants of any description is carried out by Forest Officers and Forest Guarda.

THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FOREST OFFICERS

AND FORESTERS.

The Head Forester, Assistant Head Forester and 2nd

Assistant Head Forester are usually draw from those who have qualified for clerical posts in the Government service, when appointed to the Botanical and Forestry Department they are required to read, write and speak English and to do simple translation from and into the Chinese language, later as oppor- tunity offere. they are taught to use the typewriter.

They then receive a training in elementary botany, diseases of plants, seed-collecting, map-reading, simple survey work and details of ordinary forest operations.

The Foremen and Foresters, who are not required to

speak or write English, are given instructions in diseases of

plants, seed-collecting, simple measuring, road-making, pruning,
